2002 hit-and-run case: Salman Khan's driver tells court he and not the actor was driving the car

In the recent development in the 2002 hit-and-run case in which Bollywood actor Salman Khan is accused, his driver Ashok deposed before a Mumbai court on Monday. He told the court that it was not Salman but he who was driving the car on the night of the accident in 2002 and he suspected some foul play.
The driver also claimed the car suddenly swerved at a junction and its tyre burst. While giving his statement, he clarified that he wasn't given money to depose before the court.
Salman, who appeared at the Mumbai sessions court last week to record his statement under Section 313 of CrPC, had said that a false case has been registered against him. The actor maintained that his driver was driving the car on that fateful day and that he went to the police station but the police did not record his driver's statement.

Providing a counter to prosecution's claim, the actor said he did exit from the driver's seat but that was only because the left door was completely jammed. Not just that, the actor claimed the parking assistant of JW Marriott, Kalpesh, who testified before the court saying he had handed over the car keys to the actor, was not even present. Interestingly, the parking assistant's name tag read Yogesh.
Salman has also claimed that chemical analyser Bala Shankar was not an expert and didn't know any procedure. The star also explained the circumstances that led to his car running over people sleeping on the pavement - killing one person and injuring 4 others.
